In October, 40 students from the School of Maths programme visited Lancaster University. The day started with a problem-solving workshop, guided by Dr. Raquel Coelho Simões. Students faced challenges spanning diverse mathematical domains, including Combinatorics, Calculus, Propositional Logic, Geometry, and Series.

Dr. Raquel also delivered a lecture titled 'What is Mathematics?' wherein she discussed the practical applications of pure mathematics and algebra in real-world contexts. These included data security (with a focus on end-to-end encryption and secure banking transfers), sports analytics (including win prediction models), and pharmaceuticals, where mathematical tools are employed to derive statistical insights from real-world data.

To provide a firsthand glimpse of university life, student ambassadors shared their experiences and insights in the fields of Mathematics, Statistics, and Physics. This was followed by a tour of the campus, during which students caught a glimpse of resident ducks enjoying the wet weather.

Reflecting on the day, student Jake Marcella commented, "After observing university life for Mathematics students, it was valuable to understand the topics we would study, helping me assess if university aligns with my career goals. Hearing from current students offered a taste of daily university life, helping me to get a picture of the social ambience and extracurricular activities that enhance the university education. Overall, it was an exciting and enlightening experience."
