Women in Maths Enrichment Event - University of Manchester

On June 29, 2023, the University of Manchester hosted a special event dedicated to inspiring and empowering young women in Mathematics. Six female year 12 A level Maths students attended a series of workshops led by renowned female Mathematicians. The workshops covered diverse topics, ranging from the Mathematics of card shuffling to abstract algebra and the mesmerizing world of Frieze patterns.

The event concluded with an engaging Q&A session, where the students had the opportunity to interact with the female Mathematicians. The participants posed thought-provoking questions, such as when the Mathematicians fell in love with their subject, how they perceive being female in the field of Mathematics, and how they built their careers in the discipline.

Faith Underhill, year 12 student, expressed her excitement about the event, stating, "I really enjoyed the trip and found the range of activities that were available extremely interesting. It was great getting to see the university and to get a small glimpse into the world of maths after college."

By showcasing the accomplishments of leading female Mathematicians and providing a platform for knowledge exchange, the Women in Maths Enrichment event at the University of Manchester successfully inspired and encouraged these young women to pursue their passion for Mathematics. Such initiatives play a vital role in promoting diversity in the field and unlocking the full potential of future generations of Mathematicians.
