Recently, students engaged in a thought-provoking reflection on the Fourth Crusade, exploring the reasons behind its failure in 1204. The lesson provided a unique opportunity for the students to delve into the intricacies of the siege and sack of Constantinople that took place in April of that year, an event widely regarded as a pivotal moment in medieval history.

In this exercise, the students assumed different roles, with some taking on the personas of Enrico Dandalo and his Venetian forces, while others portrayed Alexius V and the Byzantine defenders. By analysing the perspectives of the various parties involved, the students gained a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics that contributed to the outcome of the Fourth Crusade.
