Maths Students Achieve Outstanding Results in National Challenges

News - 14 January 2025

Nine talented students from the School of Maths qualified for the second-round events of the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge following their success in the competition in October 2024.

Five students advanced to the Andrew Jobbings Senior Kangaroo, a challenging competition made up of 20 problems, each requiring a three-digit number answer. Four others qualified for the British Maths Olympiad Round 1, a demanding 3.5-hour exam featuring six complex problems that require in-depth proofs.

These second-round events took place in November 2024, we celebrated the impressive results of our students. The nine who qualified performed in the top 15% of all entrants to the UKMT Maths Challenge, an extraordinary achievement in itself. Among them, three students received certificates of Merit: Dawid Terentowicz (Y13) for the Senior Kangaroo, and Gabby Ogden (Y12) and Oliver Quantrill-Scott (Y13) for the British Maths Olympiad.

Gabby Ogden, reflecting on her experience, said: “The Olympiad was a great opportunity for challenging myself in applying my knowledge to new problems and focusing on proving the maths I do. I was really happy to achieve a merit certificate, and I enjoyed the presentation with other students.”

A huge well done to all the students who took part in the challenges, they have done themselves and the college proud, with the best results in the two competitions for the college ever. These are two extremely challenging competitions in which the students need to demonstrate skills and knowledge much wider than their A levels. A brilliant achievement.
