Celebrating Maths Week England 2024 at Rochdale Sixth Form College
This week, Rochdale Sixth Form College embraced Maths Week England 2024 with a packed schedule of exciting activities designed to inspire and challenge students.
Tuesday, 12 November
Y12 Supercurricular Session – Markov Chains
The Advanced Maths Support Programme delivered an engaging session on Markov Chains, connecting matrices studied in Further Maths to real-world applications in probability and prediction. Students explored how these mathematical concepts are used in meteorology and financial forecasting, bringing abstract ideas to life.
UKMT Senior Maths Challenge Presentation
Nearly 100 of our students participated in the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge in October, achieving exceptional results. An impressive 85% earned awards, surpassing the national average of 67%. Ten students achieved Gold awards, and two earned a perfect score of 100. A certificate presentation celebrated these accomplishments, capped off with cake to mark the occasion.

WSP Careers Workshop
Graduates and engineers from WSP visited to deliver two careers workshops, showcasing their work in flood risk engineering and sustainability. Students gained insights into the practical applications of mathematics in engineering and tackled challenging numerical and non-verbal reasoning tests.
Y13 Supercurricular Session – Tangles
The Advanced Maths Support Programme returned to lead a fascinating session on Knot Theory, exploring the mathematics of untangling with practical applications in DNA structure and drug-resistant bacteria. Students delved into abstract algebra while learning about real-world implications.
Daily Challenges and Puzzles
Throughout the week, students enjoyed daily puzzles and videos, adding an extra layer of excitement to Maths Week.
Maths Week England 2024 has been a tremendous success, showcasing the versatility and importance of mathematics in both academic and real-world contexts.
