Many thanks to Eleanor D’Arcy for her recent session with our Statistics and School of Maths students. Eleanor is a PhD student in Statistics at Lancaster University.

Eleanor's passion for scientific communication is evident in her remarkable achievements. Notably, she triumphed in a national competition for her adeptness in communicating research on the industrial stage, and she was also a finalist in another prestigious competition where she presented her work at the esteemed House of Commons. As a woman in STEM, Eleanor endeavours to challenge conventional notions of mathematicians and strives to pave a smoother path for the next generation of underrepresented mathematicians.

During her session, Eleanor delved into the vital realm of statistically modelling extreme events, underscoring its crucial role in combating climate change. Through her sea level model, she provided tangible examples of statistical techniques, including linear regression, correlation, and statistical distributions concepts familiar to students studying Maths and Statistics A level. She explained how her findings contribute to the enhancement of coastal defences nationwide, thereby emphasising the practical significance of statistical research in addressing real-world challenges.

"It was great to see how the statistics we are learning now at A level can be used in sophisticated models for upgrading and future-proofing our approach to extreme weather events." - Anisa Akthe - Student

"The talk from Eleanor was informative and so relevant for the students. It was brilliant to see how what they have been learning can be used in the real world to predict tide heights and influence the updates to Coastal Defences." - Pam Sawle
