Career Focus: Accountant

Accounting requires the skills of analysis, interpretation and adaptability in order to communicate accurate financial information and drive forward business growth.

It's a necessity for every business; without it, they wouldn't be able to provide trustworthy financial records - which would limit their potential for successful expansion. An accountant is therefore able to drive growth through honest financial advice and realistic targets.

It isn’t necessary to hold a degree to do Accountancy, but it is hugely useful in providing a solid base for a career in that field and for some employers, it is a desirable criteria. A Level Maths, A Level Economics and BTEC Business Studies are also desirable qualifications. Usual University entry requirements for Accountancy and Finance are ABB or AAA, but do check each individual institution as entry requirements can vary. From there, there are a range of different qualifications you can take to become an accountant. The AAT qualification is the minimal level of qualification required for most kinds of accountancy. You can then choose to take higher level qualifications like the ACA, ACCA or CIMA, which will allow you to become a chartered accountant.

Subject Focus: Chemistry

By definition, Chemistry is the study of matter, its properties, and how and why substances combine or separate to form other substances. It also involves the study of how these substances interact with energy.

This course is challenging but rewarding, building upon the work covered at GCSE to give a wider, more detailed knowledge of Chemistry. Chemistry is a subject with significant practical and experimental content. If you have an interest in Science and a desire to develop a greater understanding of how physical sciences shape the world around us, then Chemistry may be the subject for you.

Chemistry is either required or strongly recommended for many degree courses, such as Medicine, Pharmacy and Dentistry and is also required for Veterinary Medicine. Many students wishing to study Law at University or to become accountants choose Chemistry as it shows that you can cope with difficult concepts.

Staff Profile: Mark May

Department: Art and Media

What is your role?
Art and Media Technician. I use my specialist knowledge in design, graphics, photography and screen printing to assist students and staff in the Art Studio. I make sure everything is accessible and running efficiently in my department, and that the art work around the College reflects the skill and hard work that our talented students put in.

What did you do before working here?
After finishing my degree in Computer Animation, I went on to being a freelance designer. I offered my services to marketing companies for a few months at a time, and worked on contract for individual clients.

What do you enjoy about your role?
I really enjoy helping students to realise their goals, by walking them through the creative journey and looking into the practical processes that will make this possible, and seeing their ideas come to fruition.

What’s the most memorable thing that has happened whilst you’ve been working here?
I’ll never forget receiving my first ‘thank you’ card from a student. It was then that I realised I was making a difference to the College.

What is the best thing about Rochdale?
I particularly like the varying styles of architecture.

Rochdale Sixth Form College added 14 new photos to the album SPDL Fun Forfeits - Red Nose Day 2017.06/04/2017 at 3:22pm
As part of our Red Nose Day event, students were provided with an extra incentive to donate that little bit more. As a result of smashing the £600 target and raising an incredible £1210, Student Performance and Development Leaders had to complete a series of fun forfeits. These forfeits included publishing a photo from your childhood for the whole College to see, not being able to use the lifts for a whole week and a personalised waiter service in Faraday's and Forum.

Student Profile: Hina Amjad

What do you study?
I study Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Psychology.

What have you recently been learning about?
Recently in Biology, we've been learning about gene expression, why some genes are expressed whilst others are not, and what makes cells differentiate into specialised cells.

What's the best thing about the College?
The best thing about this college is the teachers. They are always looking to help and put in a lot of extra time and effort to make sure you understand everything you learn.

What are your plans after you've left the College?
I plan to study Dentistry at King's College, London. The student support we receive during our application process is great.
