Rochdale Sixth Form College 4 – 3 Winstanley College
· Venue: Vestacare Stadium
· Kick-off: 1pm on 09/05/2018
Conditions were dry underfoot at the Vestacare Stadium as RSFC went toe to toe against Winstanley College. Winstanley had the stronger start to the game, scoring twice in the first 10 minutes. To add insult to injury, Winstanley scored a third goal shortly after this; things were looking grim for Rochdale Sixth Form College’s chances.
Leading up to half time, RSFC settled into the game. Some tactical substitutions followed, with Scott scoring just before half-time to put the wind back into our sails and a seed of doubt in the minds of the Winstanley squad as we went to the half-time break.
A rousing half-time team talk and change of tactics followed, with RSFC down but not out as we kicked off for the second half. In what was truly a game of two halves, RSFC dominated the play and this was rewarded with 2 goals in quick succession from Luke and Ged. Winstanley were struggling to cope with us allowing them to have the ball, as our speed on the counter-attack proved too deadly for them to cope with. With the tie at 3 a piece, RSFC were in control, easily soaking up the pressure of a now-frustrated Winstanley 11. As we moved into the last 10 minutes, Luke skipped round their keeper, taking us into a 4-3 lead with wild celebrations from the players and staff on the touchline.
A nervy few minutes followed, with some excellent tactical play from RSFC ensuring Winstanley were left frustrated. The final whistle blew with RSFC completing a miraculous comeback and securing the North West Colleges Sports Leagues 2nd Team Play-Off Cup for 2017/18. Massive congratulations to all players (including MOTM Scott) and staff involved and thanks to league organiser David for putting on the fixture.
