Covid 19 – How we are supporting our students
At Rochdale Sixth Form College, we recognise that the last few months have been challenging for many of our students, adapting to online learning, socially distancing from friends and family and wondering what will unfold in the next few months. Our students have responded positively to the challenges they face and we are proud of the progress they are making.
The Student Performance Development Leader’s (SPDL) are working closely with students to ensure they can continue to thrive and learn during these times. Student welfare checks take place regularly, whilst the SPDLs contact our most vulnerable students between 1- 3 times per week. The welfare checks allow the pastoral team to check in with their students to ensure any support which is needed can be put in place. This may be a chat with the SPDL or providing activities which the student can use to improve their mental wellbeing. We have a number of key worker and vulnerable students accessing lessons and support in college. The college counsellor is also working alongside the SPDL team providing virtual 1-1 support to students. Laptops and headsets have been provided for students who do not have access to these at home, to ensure they can continue with their learning.
Through the tutorial programme, we are addressing the challenges students are facing, exploring questions such as ‘What Covid rules do you find difficult to understand?’ and ‘Do Masks really work?’. We also have a focus on mental wellbeing, providing a different tool each week for the students to use.
Where possible we have moved additional opportunities online. Students are given the opportunity to attend webinars through our Speaker Programme each week and we have provided students with virtual work experience to support their application to higher education.
