Information Technology (Double Award)

WHAT IS IT?

Information Technology is the study of how technology can be used to process, present and analyse data. You will develop an understanding of how different hardware and software can be used to provide solutions to everyday issues.

WHY STUDY THIS COURSE?

You will develop a vast range of skills to prepare you for further study and employment, whether that be in an ICT related field or another area. You will learn to utilise a range of software packages to solve common issues, whilst developing an understanding of how ICT can be used within wider society.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM IT?

You will develop your skills through utilising a range of software and making use of Information Technology systems to solve a range of problems, as well as a range of employability skills required to solve problems and come up with solutions to real life business scenarios. You will also develop an in depth understanding of the impact Information Technology has in society today.

HOW IS THE COURSE ASSESSED?

Assessment is through examinations and coursework.

If you are interested in developing your skills in IT and enjoy applying your learning to different scenarios then IT may be the subject for you!

WHAT CAN I DO WITH A QUALIFICATION IN IT?

A qualification in Information Technology will allow you to develop a range of transferable skills that will support your progression into higher education and employment. Information Technology can lead to further study and employment in areas such as Games Design, Software Development or Business related courses, amongst many others. The skills you will develop on the course will support your progression to a variety of courses and employment.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

YEAR 1 – AS LEVEL

You will complete units IT1 and IT2 side by side during the year to get your AS-Level

IT1: – 60% OF YOUR GRADE

  • Written exam lasting 2 hours 15 minutes made up of two sections, which covers 12 topics of theory (Section A and B.)
  • You will prepare a spreadsheet, which you will take into the exam used to answer questions in Section B.

IT2:- 40% OF YOUR GRADE

You will complete coursework using DTP and other multimedia software. Based on a company of your choice you will design:

  • A magazine/ leaflet
  • A mail merged letter
  • A presentation

YEAR 2 – A-LEVEL

You will complete units IT3 and IT4 side by side during the year to get your full A-Level

IT3: – 60% OF YOUR GRADE

  • Written exam lasting 2 hours 30 minutes made up of two sections, which covers 9 topics of theory (Section A and B.)

IT4: – 40% OF YOUR GRADE

  • You will create a Relational Database using MS Access.

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES WITHIN THIS SUBJECT

As part of the Law, Business and ICT Honours Programme, students develop and utilise their ICT skills to design and create a functioning website.

Entry Requirements

  • 5 GCSEs at grades 4 – 9, across four separate subjects, to include GCSE Mathematics and/or English/English Language.
