WHAT IS BTEC BUSINESS?
Business (BTEC) is one of the most dynamic subjects you can choose! Business (BTEC) includes real life case studies where you will explore and critically review live departments in companies such as McDonald’s, Nike and Starbucks. By the end of the course, you will be employment ready and fully equipped with the tools to thrive in public, voluntary or private sector organisations.
WHY STUDY THIS COURSE?
Within this subject, you can really gain a sense of direction for your future career in areas such as law, marketing and finance. You will be equipped with a range of skills from exploring real life cases to visiting active, thriving businesses and gaining the insight from experienced business professionals who visit the college. You will also take part in a work placement to gain real life experience.
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT FROM BTEC BUSINESS?
Business (BTEC) will allow you to develop a real understanding of what is involved, both theoretically and practically, in becoming an effective business professional. You will develop an in-depth understanding of the topics covered on the course.
HOW IS THE COURSE ASSESSED?
This course is assessed through a variety of coursework projects and examinations. There are eight units, five of which are internally assessed (55%) and three which are external assessments (45%).

If you enjoy completing projects, working in teams, preparing business presentations and taking a more vocational approach to your studies, this course may be for you!
WHAT CAN I DO WITH A BTEC BUSINESS QUALIFICATION?
You could go on to gain a role in a small or large organisation, start your own business or become a specialist in a particular area such as marketing and advertising, finance and accounting, retail and sales, personnel development or administration. Alternatively, the course offers a wide range of future opportunities both through university and Apprenticeship programmes.
WHAT WILL I STUDY?
Unit 1: The Business Environment – the aim of this unit is to give learners the fundamental knowledge of a range of business organisations, and the many factors that shape the nature of organisations operating in an increasingly complex business world.
Unit 2: Business Resources – learners will develop knowledge of the range of human, physical, technological and financial resources required in an organisation, and how the management of these resources can impact on business performance.
Unit 3: Introduction to Marketing – the aim and purpose of this unit is to give learners an understanding of how marketing, research and planning and the marketing mix are used by all organisations.
Unit 4: Business Communication – this unit will show learners that the collection and management of business information and the successful communication of that information throughout a business is critical for the future prosperity of the organisation.
Unit 36: Starting a Small Business – the purpose of this unit is to enable learners to understand the skills needed to set up and run a business, and the regulations that need to be complied with, and to have the opportunity to prepare a detailed business plan.
Unit 37: Understanding Business Ethics – learners will be introduced to the concept of business ethics and to examine its application to the conduct of individuals in organisations and to the conduct of the organisation as a whole.
Unit 5: Business Accounting – the aim of this unit is to enable learners to understand the purpose of accounting, and the associated processes and its role in the managing of a business. Learners will develop the skills and knowledge needed to understand financial information.
Unit 9: Creative Product Promotion – this unit will give learners an opportunity to learn about the promotional mix, and the related topics of buyer behaviour and branding, before going on to design their own small-scale promotional campaign.
Unit 10: Market Research in Business – this topic will enable learners to develop an understanding of the fundamental concepts that underpin why businesses collect data about their market, how they collect and interpret it and how it can be used to support marketing decisions.
Unit 13: Recruitment and Selection in Business – learners will be introduced to recruitment and the importance of ensuring that the best people are selected to work in organisations. Learners will study selection and recruitment techniques and will set up, and take part in, a selection interview.
Unit 16: Human Resource Management in Business – the purpose of this unit is to introduce learners to methods of managing human resources in the workplace. Learners will use their knowledge of relevant human resources management theory and link it with current human resource management practices in organisations.
Unit 17: Training in the Business Workplace – the aim of this unit is to develop learners’ skills and knowledge of performance improvement in the workplace, through understanding the importance of staff training and development by identifying training needs, translating these needs into training programmes, and evaluating their success.
ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES WITHIN THIS SUBJECT
Trips to Chester Zoo, Cadbury’s World and the Trafford centre are just a few of the excursions students will partake in. Students from this course will also benefit from a variety of external speakers and will liaise with experienced business professionals.
